How does D&D work?

Dungeons & Dragons, or D&D for short, is an exciting tabletop role-playing game that takes players on an epic journey through fantasy worlds.

It all starts with creating your own character. You choose a race, class, and background that align with the hero you want to become. Do you want to be a courageous warrior, a mysterious wizard, or perhaps a cunning thief? The choice is yours!

Then the adventure begins. One of our Dungeon Masters presents a story filled with challenges, mysteries, and dangerous foes. As a player, you respond by taking actions determined by dice rolls, such as the iconic 20-sided die (d20). Random rolls add an element of suspense to the game - a high roll often leads to success, while a low roll introduces new obstacles.

D&D is all about teamwork. Working together with your fellow players, you solve puzzles, defeat monsters, and complete quests. As the adventure unfolds, your character grows, acquiring new skills and abilities. This makes each gaming session unique and engaging.

However, the real magic of Dungeons & Dragons lies in limitless imagination. You can take any action and tell any story you can conceive. Whether you're searching for treasures in ancient ruins, striving to forge peace between rival factions, or confronting a dragon, everything is possible.

In essence, playing Dungeons & Dragons is an immersive, imaginative experience where you and your friends can create and live through your own adventures. So grab your dice and immerse yourself in the enchanting world of D&D!

What do we expect from you?

The most important preparation you can make is to come to the table with a positive and cooperative attitude. D&D is all about teamwork! Additionally, we expect you to arrange a location. Preferably, we play at your home. This means it's nice to have a table where everyone can sit and play in relative peace. It can disrupt the flow of the game if non-players are constantly coming and going to watch.

If someone doesn't have a suitable space available, we can work together to find a solution. For instance, there might be a nearby café with a private area we can use. Feel free to contact us, and we'll brainstorm together!

Common questions

Do you also play in English?

Yes, we do! We have played with English-speaking players with great success. We even run some of our own campaigns in English at home. If you want to play a D&D session in English, please use contact form and write to us. We’ll get back to you as soon as possible!

Can we play with more than 5 players?

We can play with a maximum of 6 players at once, although the table may get a bit crowded. This means everyone may need a bit more patience to ensure that everyone has enough space and time to truly enjoy the game. If you want to play with even more players, please let us know! We can deploy multiple Dungeon Masters so that the groups can experience the same story. This often leads to interesting comparisons afterward because you can make different choices that dramatically affect the course of the story. That makes each gaming session unique!

Is there a minimum number of players?

Dungeons & Dragons can be played with just 1 player and 1 Dungeon Master, but for beginners, this can be an intense experience because you have to make many choices. Therefore, we recommend starting with at least 3 players if you are new to the game. This provides a more balanced and immersive experience for novice groups.

What is the difference between a Dungeon Master (DM) and a Game Master (GM)?

The answer is that 'Dungeon Master' and 'DM' are intellectual property of Wizards of the Coast. GM is actually a broader title for someone who leads role-playing games in general. A DM, on the other hand, is someone who only leads Dungeons and Dragons games. In practice, the terms are sometimes used interchangeably.

Can I become a Dungeon Master with you?

Perhaps!

We are always looking for colleagues who want to become Dungeon Masters or offer something new, like a special workshop that only you can provide.

Feel free to send a message via our contact form. We are always open to a conversation!

How does D&D work?

How long does a session D&D last?

As long as you want! At StoryForgers, we typically schedule our sessions for 4 hours of play, but we are not averse to adjustments. We can extend our sessions to be longer, and a little bit of overrun doesn't bother us much. If a session significantly extends beyond the planned time, we may charge extra. See our pricing section for more information.

How should I prepare for a One-Shot?

When you hire us, you hardly need any preparation. For a One-Shot and a Campaign, we create the Character Sheets in advance, so you don't have to worry about them. We also bring all game materials, such as miniatures and dice.

Before we start a session, we briefly cover the basics and explain the relevant rules as needed during gameplay.

This way, the game maintains good momentum, and everyone can have a great time.

If you are eager to learn the rules on your own, a free downloadable basic overview can be found here. If you want to dive even deeper, we recommend reading the Player's Handbook!

How can I create a Dungeons & Dragons Character?

It's easier than you think! Start by reading the Player's Handbook for the edition of D&D you're going to play. In our case, that's Fifth Edition, commonly known as D&D 5E.

The Player's Handbook contains all the essential information about rules, races, classes, and skills. We recommend browsing through it and getting inspired by all the possibilities!

Think about who your character is, their background, and their motivations. This will help you make choices during the character creation process. After that, it's quite simple. You choose a race, a class, and your attributes. You can use various apps to expedite this process. We recommend the Fifth Edition Character Sheet or the D&D Beyond app.

If you have questions about how to create a Dungeons & Dragons character, you can always e-mail us! We are here to help you with every step of the process.

Is Dungeons & Dragons easy to learn?

While it's not the most complicated tabletop RPG, it can be a bit challenging for some people to get into. Dungeons & Dragons has many rules, but our DMs have a lot of experience in introducing people to the game. With their guidance, you'll quickly grasp the game during play!

What do I need to play a Dungeons & Dragons session with StoryForgers?

Nothing more than a kitchen table, your imagination, and a lot of fun! For beginner players, we provide all the necessary equipment and explain the basic rules. This includes dice, character sheets, and, if needed, miniatures and playing cards. If you want to better prepare yourself, we encourage it! You can read the Player's Handbook or check out this link. The better you understand the game, the more you can shape the world to your liking.

Do I need to be creative to play D&D?

The most important goal of a D&D session is to have fun. Everyone has their own playstyle within D&D. One player might prefer role-playing, while another enjoys playing battles as strategically as possible. Both types of players are equally welcome at our gaming tables, and a mix of playstyles often leads to the most enjoyable groups. We strive to accommodate everyone's preferences and adjust our DM style accordingly.

What Does StoryForgers Do?

Do you also play online Dungeons & Dragons?

Yes, we offer both offline and online Dungeons & Dragons experiences. You can choose the mode of play that suits you and your group best. Playing online provides the flexibility to embark on adventures from home or anywhere in the world.

Feel free contact us for more information about our online D&D sessions and how we can organize them for you.

Do you take requests for campaigns?

Absolutely! We are happy to accommodate the players' desires. If there is a specific campaign you want to play, you can contact us and we will explore the possibilities together. It's possible that we may charge additional fees for preparing a campaign that we haven't played before.

What do you offer for experienced players?

StoryForgers is also for experienced players who may not always have the time to prepare complete campaigns. For experienced players, we pay special attention to what they want to see in a campaign. Requests are more than welcome. We are true D&D enthusiasts with backgrounds in theater, graphic design, philosophy, and computer science. We leverage that knowledge to go the extra mile: we're not shy about role-playing the craziest characters; we bring the playing field to life with 3D printed miniatures and terrain; we use AI image generators to create customized campaign art, and more.

Additionally, we offer services such as workshops, where you can delve into the depths of dungeon mastering with experienced dungeon masters.

Do you also play with other TTRPG systems?

Currently, we specialize in Dungeons & Dragons Fifth Edition, but we are open to requests for other systems.

Do you use other TTRPG systems yourself? Don't hesitate to contact us. You might also become a StoryForger. :)

Where are the sessions held?

Preferably, we play at your home or your workplace! This means it's nice to have a table where everyone can sit and play in relative peace. The flow of the game can be disrupted if non-players come and go, just to take a look. If someone doesn't have a suitable space available, we can explore alternatives. For example, there might be a nearby café with a private area that we can use. Feel free to contact us and we'll think of solutions together!

Pricing

Do you charge travel expenses?

Yes, we charge travel expenses based on the cost of using public transportation to reach the location.

How does payment work?

After we have had email correspondence, we will send a quote based on your request. If the quote is accepted, we will send a payment request.

Can I get an invoice?

Always! Before we come to play, we always discuss the potential (preparation) costs. Once the price is agreed upon, we send a formal invoice.

Privacy & Policy

Can we have a drink while playing?

Having a drink during the game is entirely acceptable. However, playing with inebriated players is not something we do. It makes the game difficult to run and can make some players uncomfortable. We maintain a strict policy on this and will terminate the game if we observe that this rule is not being followed. See also our code of conduct.

Can my children play with us?

We are also available for children's parties. We have organized multiple fun sessions and workshop days at schools. If you enjoy playing D&D with your family and need a DM, that is perfectly fine!

For schools, we assess what we can offer per group. We also have some educational D&D One-Shots that are a lot of fun. See our business outing page for more information.

One of my players needs special attention, is that a problem?

We have had successful sessions with children with disabilities, autism, or ADHD, and we always strive to create an inclusive and supportive environment where everyone feels comfortable.

It's important for us to know if there are specific triggers or if any adjustments are needed to enhance the experience for our players. If you can let us know about any special circumstances in advance, we can do our best to tailor the session as necessary to ensure that everyone has a great adventure.

We appreciate openness and do our best to provide a positive playing experience for everyone. If you have questions or specific requests, please don't hesitate to contact us!

What is your cancellation policy?

If you know a session will not take place, it must be announced at least 72 hours in advance, or else the entire session will be charged. This is because preparing a session takes a lot of time. The session must also be paid 72 hours in advance.

How do you handle my data?

StoryForgers only uses your name and email address when you contact us directly via our email address. Furthermore, we only collect the data necessary to successfully complete a transaction.
