Tyler
I have had a love for tabletop role playing games since middle school when my cousin and I would play the third edition of Dungeons and Dragons on my grandmother's floor after school. I went on to be the "forever DM" for my friends through high school, and into college - learning new systems and picking up tricks along the way. Later, I accepted a job in the video game industry to work on a narrative-focused comedy game called High on Life (you'll find that I like to weave humor into the stories I tell π). I also love to paint miniatures, especially for the characters in my stories. I believe strongly in an analog approach, and the power of cooperative storytelling to create memories and forge friendships.
How I run games
I approach GM-ing with 2 main pillars: world building, and improv. I build out a world, adventure, or scenario that the players will explore. This includes maps, NPCs, monsters, items, and a living world with its own problems and challenges. Then I find ways to hook the players' characters into the story of the adventure we plan to tackled. From there, the players have the autonomy to take on the challenges in whatever ways they deem most appropriate. I do not like single-solution scenarios, and I love seeing the creative ways that different tables of folks choose to tackle different issues. I am here to find ways to make all of those crazy ideas come to life - and who knows, maybe with a little help from the dice they'll even succeed!
Get to know me
What I love most about running games isβ¦
Crafting unique moments of play for friends old and new. I love giving my players authentic and meaningful decisions. Any time that I can sit back and listen to my players strategize about how to work together to tackle the challenges before them is a big win in my book.
The best session I ever ran wasβ¦
Near the end of a long-running campaign my players wound up needing to perform a heist at a casino located in the first layer of hell, The Obsidian Link. (The affectionately title the scenario "Ocean's Helleven.") The artificer broke into the vaults while the cleric, monk, and warlock worked together to create and maintain a distraction down on the casino floor. Eventually the alarm was triggered and the players scrambled to meet back up before delving into the deepest, hidden parts of The Obsidian Link, where they had a climactic final encounter over the well of souls that fueled the casino!
The kind of story I most want to tell isβ¦
One that we all make together. I do not GM so I can so you all the cool ideas I have. I GM so myself and my players can collaborate in creating a fun and interesting adventure that we can all be proud of. I use mechanics that allow players to add their own flair to the shared fantasy world. During one of my sessions, players might be asked to tell me what is unique about the town they just stumbled across, or to add to the rumors about the followers of a dead god's cult.
