he/him
My name is Walter, I live in Chicago and I have been playing D&D since 2010. I enjoy video games, TTRPGs, and almost everything science fiction/horror. When not playing games or watching movies I can be found in my kitchen or garden, either baking, cooking or gathering herbs for tea.
I am a laid back person with a curious mind. I enjoy the art of story telling and creating cozy get togethers for my friends and family around the holidays.
How I run games
I like to run games with the story centered first and foremost. If it makes sense for the story and characters, lets roll for it! I have the knowhow for a very crunchy map and mini style game, and will even take a trip to the 3D printer lab on my work campus if the game calls for it, but I prefer the theater of the mind.
By focusing on the story with just dice and pages, I feel the game can be much more immersive and approachable. I am a patient person with a warm demeanor and I love to teach people how to play so you will never feel rushed or judged at my table.
Get to know me
A house rule I will defend forever…
Let potions be an object interaction for a role and a bonus action for max HP. It's so much gold and effort if you roll poorly.
The plan I spent weeks on that lasted four minutes…
I had built an entire Steampunk campaign that verged on murder mystery/ sherlock homes-esque feel to it. I planned a two part finale that had a grueling clocktower dungeon crawl that would lead to the BBEG at the top.
I had given my players the ability to go shopping independently between sessions, and most of the party grabbed winged boots, the rest of the players had fly. So after the players giggled their way to the top and cast shatter, we started the boss battle with a party at full HP and an epic entrance.
While my cool clockwork golem puzzle remained unsprung to this day.
My proudest moment as a GM…
Was that the failure listed here let to a thunderous roar of laughter and applause from the table. They effectively got one over on the GM, and that is the goal. I tell the story so that the players can have a fun and epic tale about how they beat the Big Bad Evil Guy. Their laughter means that even when I lost, I won.
